NCPIRG monitors the voting records and positions of your North Carolina state legislators. After each legislative session, NCPIRG publishes its public interest scorecard. Some key issues that came before the N.C. General Assembly in 2004 and your state senators positions are listed below. To view your House representatives’ voting records, visit www.ncpirg.org.

1. (H 831) Protect Marine Fisheries. Creates a license for coastal recreational fishing and a fund to manage marine fisheries. Public interest vote: yes. (Signed into law).

2. (H 1264) Open Space Funding. Authorizes purchase of certain open spaces, including nearly 3,000 acres to expand Lake James State Park. Public interest vote: yes (Signed into law).

3. (H 1602) Conservation Tax Credits. Continues NC’s conservation tax credit program, which has helped landowners protect over 100,000 acres of open spaces since 1983. Public interest vote: yes (Signed into law).

4. (H 429) Compensation for Land- Use Rules. Requires compensation for government land-use ordinances, effectively precluding locally- supported measures such as billboard bans. Public interest vote: no. (Signed into law).

5. (H 737) Soft Money Ban. Limits big money poured into independent advocacy campaigns meant to influence state elections. Public interest vote: yes. (Signed into law).

6. (S 486) Protect Insurance Policyholders. Prohibits homeowners insurance companies from treating policy inquiries as if they were claims. Public interest vote: yes. (Signed into law).
