Summer
2005

It’s
summertime again, and the college students and other
young people who work with NCPIRG will be coming to
your doorstep soon, if they haven’t been there already.
Breanna
Peterson, who works with NCPIRG as a field organizer
during most of the year, will be among the directors
in our Chapel Hill office this summer.
“I like working with the media and talking to legislators,”
said Peterson, “but I’m really excited to go door-to-door,
building support for protecting our environment one
person at a time.”
Peterson will be working with Shane Bechtold and Kirsten
Collings to hire and train canvassers to pass out literature,
collect petition signatures, and find more members and
supporters like you for NCPIRG and our work to protect
the state’s lakes.
Since 1990, our door-to-door canvass has helped us solidify
and expand our base of support, while getting N.C. residents
involved in our efforts to protect the environment,
consumers and public health.
For instance, in 2000, our canvassers collected nearly
10,000 signatures from concerned Tar Heels in favor
of cleaning up the state’s coalfired power plants and
presented them to state officials.
Not only did we earn a spot in state recordbooks— most
comments submitted on an environmental issue—our public
outreach work later played a big role in the successful
passage of North Carolina’s Clean Smokestacks Law.
And
we can thank our canvassers for adding at least 6,500
new NCPIRG members over the last several years, increasing
our resources and political clout.
Thanks again for supporting NCPIRG, and the efforts
of our door-to-door canvass.
